Union Led Campaigns 07/08

The College’s Students’ Union has an impressive reputation as a campaigning body, and this year is no different.  An area of continuing activity is environmental issues, which is considered so important it has been embedded into the Union’s five-year strategic plan.  This means it will underpin all of the activities the Union undertakes.

The Students’ Union exists to make tangible positive change in the lives of all students, as students, at Goldsmiths. Every year the Students’ Union executive committee highlights three union led campaigns that we believe affect all students at Goldsmiths. These are the three campaigns that the sabbatical team primarily work on during their term in office. The executive committee is also reactive to other issues that come up throughout the year and will do what we can to best represent your needs as students.

This year the three union led campaigns are

- ‘Student rights’, which proposes a student rights charter for students outlining what they can expect from the College in terms of assessment, results, and support. Students are paying more than they ever have and expect more in return. More students are working part time than ever before, so it will also address your rights as workers outside of Goldsmiths.
- ‘Wellbeing’ focuses on issues surrounding mental health, safety and security, and includes a week dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of your wellbeing; whether that be physical, psychological or spiritual. Look out for the condom stall and mental health campaigns.
- ‘Education funding’ will concentrate attention on the impact of variable fees specifically on Goldsmiths students. We will lobby both the warden and our local MP to take a stand either way. We need to effectively mobilise against the governments proposals to create a fee system where only the rich will be able to afford to go to the best universities.

We base our campaigns on feedback from students we receive throughout the year and via our 15 officers at election time. We hope that they will highlight issues of interest to all students. We campaign on behalf of the whole student body at Goldsmiths, advocating for the wellbeing of students and fighting for their rights.

If you are interested in any of these campaigns then please get in touch with your union representatives who can give you more information.
