Goldsmiths Students' Union as an organisation has certain values that have been democratically decided by our students. For example, the army have been banned from Goldsmiths for the past 5 years, ever since the Iraq War started. Goldsmiths SU win s awards for enviromental excellence and is Twinned with a Palestinian University in the West Bank (Al-Quds). We're an explicitly anti-racist, anti-sexist organisation, with pro-choice policy (we recently affiliated to Abortion Rights) and a committment to fighting for Free Education.
If students or student societies arrange a talk/debate/discussion about any issues to do with Womens and LGBT rights, anti-racism, anti-war or against the market in education, the Union supports these meetings by marking them as part of our Union Ethos campaign. We want our students to know what we stand for and play a leading role in shaping it.
Democracy is also a big value within Goldsmiths SU. Recently, over 500 students have signed petitions calling for a referendum to bring back the Students' Meeting - the referendum will take place early next term and we hope that once student democracy is back, students can start taking charge of their Union.
